Bananas in Space – A Cool Looking Screensaver for Windows
Review by on
To my mind, there is much to like about this application. First up, I have to say that I went bananas about the name. Try pronouncing Bananas in Space for a few times, but with a serious voice, like the voiceover guy who does the promos for all the action movies and you will see what I mean.

Then I liked that downloading and installing the application on my Windows-powered PC did not take a lot of time. The download for example weighs in at some 730KB, which is incredibly lightweight. Even on a less than spectacular internet connection, getting Bananas in Space off the web and onto your computer will only take a moment – which to my mind is great news. I don’t think anybody likes to wait a long time for a download to complete.

Installing the application, like downloading it, took very little time as well. A few clicks in the setup wizard and you are done – it is a smooth process that goes along without a hitch.

When Bananas in Space launches, it can do two things. The main thing is does is it displays dozens of bananas elegantly spinning and drifting across the screen. There are no options to customize the way the bananas look, nor are there any options to influence the number of bananas that are displayed on the screen. There is no background scenery, just a black background – guess this is supposed to signify the emptiness of space.

The second thing the application can do is play M3U playlist files in the background.

Before you go get Bananas in Space and put it to the test, take a look at the following details:
Download – as mentioned above, the download weighs in at some 730KB.
Installation – at the time of writing this and according to the developer, Bananas in Space provides support for Windows 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, XP, and Vista. During the installation process you are asked if you want to put desktop shortcuts on the screen; this will put a Configuration and a Run shortcut on the screen.
Limitations – logo overlay and reminder message in the trial version.

Pros
  • Lightweight download
  • Plays M3U playlist files
  • Tiny logo overlay and reminder message instead of a time-limited trial

Cons
  • Lack of customization options
  • No background scenery
